The Power of Christ in Jail By Bruce Ackerman

Jerome Bellamy, right, and Wilbert Tolbert raise their hands as they exult to the Heavens and pray to God during a church service in the Marion County Jail in Ocala, Fla. on Tuesday, July 15, 2008. Over 200 inmates joined together in the church service Tuesday where they listened to Pastor Samuel Franklin of the Sanctuary of the Most High God Church and watched a videotaped church service by Pastor Tim Gilligan of Meadowbrook Church in Ocala. Issue #125 By True Supporter on 7/24/2008 1:54 AM
We have received information that an African American watch commander employed with the Marion County Sheriff's Office for more than 25 years has accused several deputies within his own agency of racially based profiling, a federal crime, during a June 2008 traffic enforcement operation. In a departmental email, the watch commander alleges that the deputies were specifically and intentionally targeting African American drivers based solely on their ethnicity (being black). The bureau chief of the community policing bureau responded to the allegations in a written letter. We will be filing a public information request to obtain the electronic communication, the written response and the subsequent findings of their internal investigation. If we can get past the stone wall of the west wing, we will obtain and post these documents.
This is true, but the watch commander was way out of line doing what he did. There was no basis to his allegations. It was nothing but bad judgment
based on his racist perceptions.

Of course you think he was out of line, and of course you think there's no basis for his allegations! You know why? Because you are probably a Caucasian male, and we live in a Caucasian world. Maybe it's not about the numbers, and maybe it's about perception.

shame By slocala on 8/6/2008 11:32 PM
It is truly a shame that a high ranking employee within the Marion County Sheriff's Office would accuse a group of his own brethren as being racists.
If he truly believed the deputies were stopping cars based on race, then why didn't he take immediate action and put an end to it? After all, isn't that what supervisors are suppose to do!
