Sgt. Ed Phillips of the Marion County Sheriff's Office, describes how Bradley Vanderhoff shot at him and other deputies before Circuit Judge Hale Stancil sentenced Vanderhoff to 12 years probation at the the Marion County Judicial Center in Ocala, Fla. on Wednesday, July 2, 2008. In April 2005, Vanderhoff shot at several Marion County deputies from inside the shower at his Weirsdale home after his wife placed a 911 call, fearing he would take his own life. He was charged with three counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. Vanderhoff, who has multiple sclerosis, was wearing sunglasses in the courtroom due to an eye condition brought on by the disease. Sentencing guidlines showed that Vanderhoff could have received up to life in prison for the charges. (Star-Banner Photo/NYTRENG, Bruce ACKERMAN).

Unbelievable! Probation for a man who could have very easily killed some of our law enforcement officers. If this guy is that disturbed, why not sentence him to some Chattahoochee time. I find the whole thing absurd, but I am shocked that the State Attorney's office even pursued the case and actually took something to trial. That's more of a story than the guy getting off with probation. God forbid if anyone up there filed on a case and actually took a chance that a jury might find someone guilty as charged. It would be a nice change if they quit worrying about their own personal agenda and "winning" percentage, and took one to trial. It's easy to have a 100% conviction rating when you never take anything to trial. Quit playing defense attorney, and quit playing juror. You will earn a lot more respect for trying than you will with a 100% rating.

Issue #125 By True Supporter on 7/24/2008 1:54 AM<br>We have received information that an African American watch commander employed with the Marion County Sheriff's Office for more than 25 years has accused several deputies within his own agency of racially based profiling, a federal crime, during a June 2008 traffic enforcement operation. In a departmental email, the watch commander alleges that the deputies were specifically and intentionally targeting African American drivers based solely on their ethnicity (being black). The bureau chief of the community policing bureau responded to the allegations in a written letter. We will be filing a public information request to obtain the electronic communication, the written response and the subsequent findings of their internal investigation. If we can get past the stone wall of the west wing, we will obtain and post these documents.
