Lap 200 -- Ryan Newman gets a run up high as Kyle Busch makes a run low on Stewart. Newman gets a big push from teammate Kurt Busch and takes the lead going into turn 3. Newman and Kurt Busch finish one-two.

Lap 195 -- Mears gets hooked into the turn 1 wall as he was trying to block Stewart. The caution flag flies again.

Lap 189 -- Burton goes to the lead as Biffle goes to second. Blaney gets turned into the turn 3 wall and the caution comes out. Martin and Hamlin suffer some damage when they run into Blaney's car.

Lap 183 -- Bowyer gets tagged by Montoya while leading and spins down the frontstretch. He keeps the car out of the wall and keeps the incident a single car one.

Lap 181 -- Bowyer hangs Earnhardt out to dry and takes the lead.

Lap 178 -- Busch pits but slides through his pit stall. He compensates by taking just two tires. About seven cars, including Earnhardt, stay out.

Lap 177 -- Hornish spins Johnson coming out of turn 2. He spins down the backstretch. Truex and Michael Waltrip also spin to avoid Johnson, but Truex spins into Johnson. The caution flag is out.

Lap 173 -- Stewart fights back to regain the lead. He and Earnhardt get a little breathing room.

Lap 171 -- Earnhardt gets the lead momentarily, but Stewart takes it right back. Now Earnhardt swaps the lead again and holds it.

Lap 170 -- Stewart goes from third to first as the leaders race side by side.

Lap 169 -- Kahne fights back on the outside as Busch tries to go through the middle. Amazing move. Kahne goes to the lead.

Lap 168 -- Kahne jumps to the outside and challenges for the lead. Bowyer goes low to take second as Kahne backslides to third.

Lap 162 -- All the lead lap cars pit except for Earnhardt. Several cars just take two tires. Dave Blaney leads the race off pit road.

Lap 161 -- The Roush teammates of Ragan and Kenseth merge together coming off turn 4. The two hit each other and the outside wall. Both cars go to the garage.

Lap 159 -- Biffle loses third spot to Earnhardt and fourth to Newman. Now Kahne passes him for fifth.

Lap 158 -- Busch goes back to the lead with help from Stewart, who falls into second.

Restart Lap 156 -- Top 5: Biffle-Busch-Stewart-Earnhardt-Kenseth

Lap 154 -- Jeff Gordon goes behind the pit wall with suspension problems. Several cars pit to get more fuel.

Lap 152 -- The leaders hit pit road, and Biffle gets off first. He's followed by Kyle Busch, Stewart, Kurt Busch and Earnhardt.

Lap 151 -- The second caution comes out for debris in turn 2.

Lap 143 -- Kenny Wallace falls out of the race.

Lap 132 -- Regan Smith bounces off the wall in turn 2 and heads to pit road. For now, the race stays green.

Lap 128 -- The top six cars have broke off to form one lead pack. They lead the second pack of about 15 cars by four seconds.

Lap 125 top 5: Kyle Busch-Newman-Earnhardt-Stewart-Bowyer

Lap 123 -- Newman leads as pit stops cycle, but Busch passes him going into turn one. Kurt Busch serves a penalty for speeding on pit road.

Lap 121 -- Biffle leads the rest of the leaders to pit road.

Lap 120 -- Newman now goes by Busch for the lead on the outside. Busch and several leaders pit. Busch leads Earnhardt, Clint Bowyer and Stewart off pit road.

Lap 119 -- Over half the racetrack is now in the shade as the sun begins to set. Newman passes Biffle for second.

Lap 116 -- Pit stops are about 10 laps away. Busch leads Biffle, Newman, Earnhardt and Kenseth.

Lap 110 -- Busch retakes the lead, completing the 22nd lead change of the race.

Lap 109 -- Biffle isn't content to follow his teammate. He passes Kenseth with help from Kyle Busch.

Lap 108 -- Kenseth takes the lead as Kurt Busch gets turned and almost spins down the backstretch.

Lap 107 -- Biffle and Kenseth get the low lane going again and now challenge for the lead. They race Busch and Gordon for second.

Lap 105 -- Gordon and Earnhardt team up again and get past Biffle and Newman to take second and third. Now Gordon looks high on Kyle Busch for the lead.

Lap 102 -- Add Greg Biffle to the list of contenders. He's snaked his way through the front pack to move up to third.

Lap 100 -- Ryan Newman is making his presence known. He's taken the inside line up to challenge for the lead. He gets past Gordon for second.

Lap 94 -- Kyle Busch passes his brother to take the lead, but the lead pack is 20 cars strong.

Lap 86 -- Vickers and Martin fall off the pace and head to pit road with tire issues.

Lap 85 -- Kurt Busch gets help from his brother to go to the lead. Sorenson gets knocked out of the draft and sinks through the field.

Lap 81 -- Lead lap cars pit, many for just right side tires. Busch leads the race off pit road. Reed Sorenson stays on the track to take the lead.

Lap 80 -- The first caution comes out for debris on the backstretch.

Lap 78 -- Pit stops cycle through and Busch retains the lead.
Top 5 -- Busch-Gordon-Hamlin-Kenseth-Biffle

Lap 75 -- The rest of the leaders pit, and Busch leads Hamlin and Tony Stewart off pit road.

Lap 74 -- Several of the leaders hit pit road. Gordon leads Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Johnson and Earnhardt out.

Lap 69 -- Elliott Sadler pits for four tires and fuel after scrubbing the wall.

Lap 68 -- Busch and Hamlin continue to swap the lead, and now Busch goes to the front.

Lap 65 -- Hamlin won't go away. He gets past Earnhardt and Gordon and then passes Busch to retake the lead.

Lap 62 -- The lead pack grows from three to eight cars. Earnhardt teams up with Gordon to pass Hamlin.

Lap 59 -- Hornish pits with a reported vibration and loses a lap.

Lap 55 -- Busch passes Hamlin on the inside to take the lead. The top three cars make up a small pack for the moment.

Lap 50 Top 10 -- Hamlin-Busch-Gordon-Earnhardt-Kenseth-Johnson-Edwards-Kahne-Hornish-Sadler

Lap 38 -- Nemechek pits again and heads to the garage with engine trouble.

Lap 37 -- The leaders and everyone else hit pit road. Gordon is the first car off followed by Busch, Earnhardt and Johnson.

Lap 35 -- A dozen more cars including Kenseth and Burton pit, all for four tires and fuel.

Lap 34 -- Hornish and Casey Mears pit along with John Andretti and Joe Nemechek.

Lap 30 -- Gibbs and Hendrick cars fill out the top 5, but rookie Sam Hornish is looking to crash the party. He runs sixth.

Lap 28 -- Gordon gets back by Earnhardt, but Kyle Busch passes them both. He's now second behind Hamlin.

Lap 26 -- Earnhardt drives to the bottom of the track and gets by Gordon for second.

Lap 20 -- Hamlin gets back to the lead, but the man on the move is Kyle Busch. He's moved up from 24th to third in 20 laps.

Lap 18 -- Racing at the front picks up and Gordon takes the lead for the first time today.

Lap 15 -- Hamlin goes beneath his teammate to take the lead. Stewart falls back to sixth.

Lap 12 -- Now the top 10 cars run single file.

Lap 9 -- Stewart, Hamlin, Gordon and Johnson race single file, but cars swap positions from fifth on back every lap.

Lap 6 -- Stewart prevails on the high side and takes over the lead. Hamlin falls in behind him for second.

Lap 4 -- Hamlin and Stewart team up to go by Johnson for the lead. The teammates race side by side for the lead.

Lap 3 -- Johnson gets drafting help from Hamlin to take the lead.

Green Flag -- Johnson shoots to the lead with Earnhardt in tow. Michael Waltrip slices by both of them to lead the first lap.

The temperature is hovering around the mid-80s, making this Daytona 500 the warmest one on record.

3:25 -- The Daytona 500 is just 15 minutes away. 43 of NASCAR's brightest stars and fastest cars will race 200 laps around this 2.5-mile tri-oval with the winner taking home a record $1.5 million.

3:15 -- The pre-race show is over, and it couldn't be over soon enough. All that's left is the invocation, the anthem and the command to fire engines. Green flag is at 3:40 p.m.

1:30 -- The Drivers Meeting is underway in the Daytona media center, and all 24 living Daytona 500 winners are present.

Jim France spoke at the meeting, remembering his brother Bill France Jr. who passed away in June.

"If he were here today, he'd be thankful to all of you who've built this," France said. "Now don't screw it up."


Over 200,000 race fans have descended upon Daytona Beach today to form the largest Daytona 500 crowd ever.

It's for good reason. The Great American Race celebrates its gold anniversary today.
