The Internet is a lie-infested swamp of political libel. Here are a few tools to tell the facts from the fabrications.
When it comes to politics and the Internet, there's a lot of junk out there. The Web is a nest of nasty rumors, vile e-mails and anonymous slanders.

But then you probably know that already.

On the other hand, it can be a wonderful tool for boosting political cooperation and getting solid information on candidates and issues. The key is knowing the source of your information, knowing whether it's a reliable source or an untrustworthy cadre with an overriding political agenda.

I like the Vote Smart Project for a dose of good information.

Here are some sites you can use to check and correct those rumors: snopes.com, factcheck.org and politifact.com. And, looking there, you'll uncover plenty of lies, not only from the online gossips, but also from the candidates themselves.

Just who is Penny Coleman, and what is she doing writing for the Star-Banner?

Penny Coleman is an anti-war, anti-military leftist. She writes for the Daily Kos, Impeach Them, American Labor Against the War and other such liberal blogs and websites. A cursory Google search of her name on the Internet reveals hundreds of websites and news articles written by and about Ms. Coleman and her radical views which include a belief that the US drugs our troops and that our troops kill women and children in Iraq.

On Sunday, January 13 the Ocala Star-Banner ran a lengthy article by Penny Coleman, giving her the title "Special to the Star-Banner." Ms. Coleman’s article attacked respected local Congressman Cliff Stearns for his “lack of compassion” about a veteran’s suicide. For those who know Rep. Stearns, his record, his life and his family, we know he is a veteran himself, who supports our troops and fights for the rights of North Central Florida Veterans. The record and the facts show Rep. Stearns to be a co-sponsor and advocate of the recently passed into law, “Veterans Suicide Prevention Act.” We also know, that he is compassionate about human life from its conception.

With these facts, one wonders why Penny Coleman, from Rosendale, New York would want to write such an attack piece on a Congressman more than 1,000 miles from her home. Why would she use this military family from Illinois who lost a son to suicide to attack a Congressman from Florida?

Just who is Penny Coleman, and what is she doing writing for the Star-Banner?

Penny Coleman is the author of many books. Here in her own words, she describes one of them:

Coleman: “Village Elders is a collection of unique stories and portraits that describes the lives and loves of older members of the lesbian and gay community, the history they have witnessed, the fears and prejudices they have overcome, and the community they have pioneered.”

Should one figure Ms. Coleman an expert on gay and lesbian issues, Ms. Coleman figures herself an expert on the American military. An expert on American lies and atrocities as she claimed in her statement before Congress that, “soldiers who, following orders, have run over children in the road rather than slow down their convoy.”

How could the Star-Banner let someone who is avowedly anti-military write an article about the military? How can the Star-Banner take seriously someone who has recently written an article claiming the “Pentagon Drug[s] Troops,” and then let her, apparently unquestioned, write an article about our local Congressman?

The answer is unfortunately all too clear, the Star-Banner and Penny Coleman share the same agenda, blame American and our institutions first. They share the same views, that the American military and the Republican Party are forces of evil. While these view might be consensus in Ms. Coleman’s hometown in New York, the home state of the Star-Banner, it is the opposite of the views held here in Ocala. Most folks here believe that our Republican Congressman and our military are both a force for good in the world.

The Star-Banner allowing this woman to write this article is shameful and disgraceful.

Read Coleman's book, FLASHBOOK. Be certain to read the Notes section. Be grateful that the First Amendment still has meaning. Won't be long until the free press will be no longer.
