And the winner is...

5. David Reutimann

Former Ocala Speedway star cozied up with Michael Waltrip and won his first Busch race.

4. Walter Ray Williams

The best bowler alive makes his home right here in Ocala. He tosses a mean horseshoe too.

3. Daniel Lincoln

Forest alumnus cracked the record books in his first season as a Volunteer.

2. Joey Mantia

Vanguard grad won gold medals like they were scratch-off lottery tickets, and might be headed for the Olympics.

1. Albert Gary

The county's best football player brought more glory to the Northside with a historic senior season.

Very SHOCKED that Grace Daley did not make the list but Greg Carr did???? Come on Grace was a proven winner in high school, college, and the pros.

I agree Grace should have made the cut, but do think over all Greg did a good job! (Although Rudell should have been a top 10...lol)!

And Daniel Lincoln ranks ahead of a guy who is in 2 (TWO!) sports Halls of Fame?

hmmm...If we are going to deep further in the Marion County pool..I nominate Steve Rhem. A wonderful roll model whom just happened to have played for a little team named the Saints?? But now (2007) is playing for the kids! He is the director of the Genius House for Foster kids at the most critical age they could be at 14-18. I have seen first hand how he uses his sports experince in teaching each of them they can win in life!!! Oh and he also helped coach a team callled the "North Marion Colts"!!!! Bottomlline is we have too many wonderful people helping our kids on this top 20 list that no one could list them!!!
Great Job Greg!!!
(although Rudell BETTER be a top 10 next year! LOL)

Thanks all for your comments. I can tell you Grace Daley was among my most difficult omissions, along with fellow pros Drayton Florence and Clinton Hart of the Chargers. And keep in mind that this list considered only the achievements of 2007. Clearly, legends like Walter Ray and Duante are far more accomplished than Daniel Lincoln, Albert Gary and the like. A list of the county's best athletes would be a very different list, would certainly include people like Rhem and Daley, and sounds like a worthy pursuit for a future feature on The Sports Blog. Again, thanks for reading.
