Chris Waldorf, 30, also known as Crystle Chambers, is a drag queen who performed regularly at nightclubs throughout Florida and competed for years in pageants when I took this photo in 2004. I spent lots of time following Chris around with my camera, learning about his lifestyle. I watched him dance on stage in costumes he made at home with his own sewing machine. I listened to him and his friends, all males dressed as females, sing along to the soundtrack of "Moulin Rouge." I watched him change a tire at his mother's house. I dodged his screaming fans, who were waving dollar bills toward him. And I was impressed by his Cher impersonations. And in this photo, I was watching Chris get dressed for a show. He was rummaging through a suitcase of clothes, shoes, wigs and make-up in a motel room in Orlando, and I got this shot. I like this shot. He paid me hardly any attention. He was so completely absorbed in his social life. And I really never did think of him as a him. I felt the entire time that I was getting to know an interesting, flirty, boisterous, sassy, proud, creative and talented woman.
