Join The Sports Blog for a quiet, relaxing night of high school football completely devoid of postseason implications.

Hello, friend. Come on in. We're just enjoying a nice, laid-back evening of high school football here in the offices of The Sports Blog. Chilling, as it were. We've got some games we'll keep an eye on tonight, and I do mean just an eye, because the other is liable to be closed. If I alternate eyes, there's a chance I'll achieve something close to a nap. A working, fully-paid nap. I'm looking forward to it.
The four games we've got on our menu tonight are perfectly respectable high school football contests. It's just that they don't have implications. Outside of sports, implications are often bad - they can cause arguments, misunderstandings, hurt feelings, maybe even legal proceedings. But in sports, implications are awesome. It means teams are playing for something larger than the immediate game they're participating in, meaning the postseason. It's always good to no there is something bigger than one's self.
The days of implications in the realm of Marion County high school football ended Monday, when Williston ruined the postseason dreams of 20 percent of our fair county's teams in just 24 minutes. I was there, and it was nasty, brutish and short, just like Hobbes predicted. But it was also compelling football, given what was at stake.
Tonight, we've got nothing of the sort.
You see, we already know which teams will play past this week and which ones won't. North Marion and Trinity Catholic are the county's remaining hopes for playoff glory. The rest are either already done for the season or a mere four quarters away from it. Five of the teams that play tonight - Dunnellon, Forest, Vanguard, West Port, and St. John - are in the latter category. The other, North Marion, would be wise to put Albert Gary in one of those plastic cases they drive the pope around in, as the only significant thing that can happen tonight is a poorly-timed injury.
Still, intra-county rivalries will be extended this evening, and there is always the charming notion of entering next year on a high note, as if a victory tonight will resonate through the holidays and the summer and on into training camp. But that's a pessimistic view of things, and sports, if about nothing else, should represent optimism, a striving to be the best. So let's end with that uplifting thought, and get to
tonight's games. Please comment freely while avoiding PG-13 language and adult situations.
Dunnellon 45
@ Forest 35
TD UPDATE: Wildcats pick up a fumble inside the Dunnellon red zone and quickly cash in. Mike Tanner tosses to Serggio Judkins from six yards out, and Chris Veron makes the kick for a 7-0 Forest lead with 6:37 to play in the first.
TD UPDATE: Lerentee McCray answers with a 4-yard run. Rodrigo Quezada's kick ties it at 7-7 with 3:02 to play in the first.
UPDATE: 7-7 after 12 minutes.
TD UPDATE: Dunnellon QB Andrew Stichter on a 1-yard keeper with 9:07 to play before half. XP blocked, and it's 13-7 Tigers.
TD UPDATE: Charles Ambrose just scored from 41 yards out, and boss of The Sports Blog Andy Marks wants me to use an adjective such as "dazzling" to describe it. I didn't see it, but I hate to let Andy down. Charles Ambrose breaks off a dazzling 41-yard run, and Veron makes the kick to put the 'Cats up 14-13.
UPDATE: All available evidence suggests that Forest is bringing it tonight. Doug Webb picks off Stichter at midfield on Dunnellon's first play from scrimmage, and Ambrose turns in an 18-yard run to put the 'Cats on the doorstep again.
UPDATE: Forced turnover + great field position = nothing, as Forest kicker Veron misses just left on a 50-yard FG attempt.
TD UPDATE: Forest got that elusive TD. Ambrose runs in his second score of the game to build the Forest lead to 21-13 with 1:28 to play before half. Ambrose has 105 yards on 12 carries with 2 TDs.
HALFTIME: Forest 21, Dunnellon 13
TD UPDATE: Donald Webb's 1-yard run and a Veron XP puts Forest up 28-13. Judkins set up the score with a 53-yard return on the second-half kickoff.
TD UPDATE: Dunnellon gets back in it on Stichter's second 1-yard keeper of the game. Kick is good, 28-20 Forest, 3:17 in the third.
TD UPDATE: Forest responds quickly. Judkins catches a 49-yard bomb from Tanner with 1:45 in the third. XP puts the 'Cats up 35-20.
3RD QUARTER: Forest 35, Dunnellon 20.
FG UPDATE: Dunnellon kicker Quezada good from 42 yards out, cutting the Forest lead to 35-23 with 11:47 to play.
TD UPDATE: Stichter runs it in from 1 yard for the third time this game. XP brings Tigers within 35-30 with 7:18 left.
TD UPDATE: Dunnellon takes back the lead. Mike Huilker picks up an Ambrose fumble and runs it back into Forest territory, and Bubba Black cashes in with a 22-yard TD run. McCray's 2-point conversion puts Tigers up 38-35.
UPDATE: Dunnellon's Terrence Brooks gets a timely pick at the Tigers 30, halting a crucial Forest drive. Tigers trying to waste the last 2:40.
TD UPDATE: That's even better than wasting time. Bubba Black runs it in from 57 yards, likely sealing a Tigers win. With 1:12 to play, Dunnellon leads 45-35.
FINAL: Dunnellon 45, Forest 35. Tigers wrap it up at an even 5-5; Forest finished at 4-6.
North Marion 28
@ Vanguard 21
UPDATE: Scoreless after a quarter.
TD UPDATE: North Marion goes up 7-0 early in the 2nd quarter on an 8-yard Albert Gary run.
TD UPDATE: QB Tyrell Lewis finds Marquee Williams for a 27-yard score, tying the game at 7-7 with 5:09 before half.
TD UPDATE: Gary knocks one in from one yard out just 25 seconds before the end of the first half. 14-7 Colts.
HALFTIME: North Marion 14, Vanguard 7.
TD UPDATE: Tie game. Leo Burgess runs 43 yards to the 1, and Lewis punches it in. XP is good, and it's 14 apiece with 4:32 to play in the third.
TD UPDATE: Gary's third TD of the game comes on an 8-yard run with 1:20 to play in the third. 21-14 Colts.
TD UPDATE: Kevin Hardy runs it in from 30 yards on a fake FG. Tie game, 21-21, with 10:45 to play.
TD UPDATE: Colts back on top 28-21 on an 8-yard run by Eddie Rocker. 8:36 to play.
FINAL: Colts hold on, 28-21. They end the year on a 9-game streak after losing their opener to Nease, and move on to the playoffs. Vanguard's done at 2-8.
West Port 3
@ Fleming Island 41
FINAL: Fleming Island blasts West Port 41-3. Wolf Pack end the season on a down note, missing out on the postseason with a poor quarter against Williston and now taking a TD-less loss into the offseason. West Port ends its season at 2-8.
St. John 26
@ Hernando Christian 39
FINAL: Saints end their season at 1-9 with a 39-26 loss at Hernando Christian. No stats were made available.

| How about the job Coach Damon has done at North Marion? He was already arguably one of the best football players to ever play at the school. Now, to be leading the best high school football team of any class in this part of the state is herioc. Yeah it's great that they are winning games and competing for championships, but the real benefit is the sense of pride he has instilled in a bunch of young men. Students are really responding to his guidance.. Coach, you are a man of great integrety, class and pride... All North Marion alum are extremely proud of you coach.... |
