King George expected to get the Congressional smackdown for dismissing national priority.
REALITY BITES (for Bush)
Our ignoramus-in-chief George Bush has once again wielded his veto pen. This time it was to shoot down the wildly popular Water Resources Development Act, which would help restore water as a top priority in this country – even if it means cutting into the profit of those few who have profited on destroying our most treasured natural resource.
From the New York Times: “The water projects measure has something for nearly every state and Congressional district and easily cleared Congress. Louisiana Republicans were particularly unhappy with the president’s decision to reject the measure since it provides more than $3 billion for major post-Katrina flood control projects.”
FLORIDA BITES BACK
The bill was also a slap-in-the-face rejection to our Great State - of a $2 billion restoration project for our Florida Everglades.
From the Star-Banner opinion page: “Many in Marion County's delegation seems prepared to help hand Bush a defeat. Reps. Ginny Brown-Waite and Ric Keller, both Republicans, and Democrat Corrine Brown voted for the WRDA.
"Disappointingly, Ocala Republican Cliff Stearns voted against it.
"For a president whose tenure has been marked by the lame response to Hurricane Katrina and a willingness to sacrifice environmental assets to corporate interests, Bush might have shown a willingness to safeguard the nation's water-related infrastructure, expand the wetlands that augment them and improve the nation's drinking water. Alas, it didn't happen this time.
We invite the president to visit Marion County if he wants a lesson on the value of water. Until he does, we urge Congress help him understand by overriding this veto.”
VETO OVERRIDE
Bush said “no.” Everyone else (except a few far-right party-liners like John Boehner and Cliff Stearns) is saying “yes,” and the Congress stands ready to deliver the first override to Bush’s scarce vetos. (Bush never vetoed any spending bill during the Republican-led Congress of ’00-‘04)
From the Associated Press: “President Bush enters a new phase of government-by-minority this month, issuing a veto certain to draw the first override of his presidency … Bush's growing use of the veto, combined with his continued embrace of executive orders and 'signing statements,' signal his willingness to defy large portions of Congress and the public to shape policies in his final year in office.”
“’He may decide that all he wants to do is veto and stop progress,’ said Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, head of the House Democratic Caucus. ‘But everybody will know who wants to change things, and who wants to keep them just the way they are.’”
“Until last week, Bush used the veto sparingly, applying it only when congressional conservatives were sure to prevent an override. That changed Friday, when he vetoed a water projects bill popular with lawmakers in both parties.”
WHERE DO YOU STAND?
In my opinion, the '08 election can't come soon enough. The sooner we can get King George and his followers out of office, the sooner the world will be a safer place for my kids. Take note of where people sit on this serious issue, and then be sure to vote. It is the only voice you have in the face of people like Bush and Stearns.
I will post the voting stances of local officials - city and county - as the election draws nearer.
