The number 42 has gained a reputation of sorts, far beyond what one might normally expect of a simple two-digit entity. Late author Douglas Adams was apparently quite taken with the enormous significance of the number 42, and he declared it “The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.” However, it’s not just important in Adams’ “The Hitch-hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” but in many other fields as well.
In the ones and zeros language of binary expression, the language all computers ultimately speak, 42 becomes 101010. It was the jersey number of Pat Tillman at Arizona State University. In the ASCII character code, it represents an asterisk. In the game of cricket, there are 42 laws or rules. Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” had 42 illustrations, and in that story the king refers to the oldest rule in the book – 42, which requires all players more than a mile high to exit the court. (No doubt so they can seek lucrative basketball contracts.) In New York city, 42nd Street is a main two-way thoroughfare that has given rise to a Broadway play and a movie. Times Square, the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station and the New York Public Library all call 42nd Street home.
Eight digits of the value of pi beginning from 242,422 places after the decimal point are 42424242, according to www.wikipedia.com. Another entry states that 42 degrees is the angle at which light must reflect off water to create a rainbow. A barrel contains 42 gallons. Again, from wikipedia, “Two physical constants in the universe are the speed of light and the diameter of a proton. It takes light 10 to the minus 42nd power seconds to cross the diameter of a proton.”
In fact, a few minutes research on the Internet will quickly reveal there are legions of Adams fans eagerly searching out more and more instances of the “mysterious” number 42.
Now that I think about it, I distinctly remember 42 was a pretty good age for me, as well. Hmmm... maybe there’s something to all this after all! |
