Bowlers Responsibilties - Results from State Tournament - High Scratch Game - Weekly Scores

Good Morning Bowlers. This is the last weekend in October and fast approaching the last week of the month. Don’t forget those trick or treaters on Wednesday.

Daylight savings time will end on Saturday, November 3, 2007, wherein you will turn your clocks back an hour to pick up that hour that you lost in the Spring when you turned your clocks ahead. Take advantage of this extra time to catch up on what’s happening in the world of bowling.

Bowlers - you pay a certification fee to the local association, the national association and the state association (where applicable). What does that money go for you ask? The money at the national level is anyone’s guess. They will tell you that they give you $12 worth of service and only charge you $10. Feel free to contact them and ask for an explanation.

At the local level the money that you pay for your association dues goes to support the programs and services that are provided to YOU the bowler in the form of towels, pins, plaques, shirts and other awards that you earn by bowling scores within certain criteria as established by the board of directors of your local associations.

You elect officers for your leagues and these officers are there to ensure you, THE BOWLER, receive the awards you earn during league competition and the prize money you are entitled to at the end of the league season. The specific rules for all the officers of a league can be found in the USBC General Playing Rules handbook. If you don’t have a copy and would like one please let your league officers know - or you can go to the Internet and read the book on-line or print it out (around 117 pages). Most leagues pay the secretary/treasurer to perform the duties of their job.

The league secretary/treasurer is responsible for submitting to the local association(s) the forms for the various awards you may have earned at the local and national level. If you have bowled a score that you think is eligible for an award check with your league secretary/treasurer. Ask them to show you the forms they have for the various local awards - they also have a form for the national awards and should be able to provide that to you as well so that you will know what awards are available. Some of the awards at the local level are lifetime meaning that once you receive it you cannot receive it again, but you may still qualify for some other award in another category. If you have not received awards that you feel you have earned, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, YES YOU, THE BOWLER, to check with your league secretary/treasurer regarding the status of any such award. If you, THE BOWLER, are not receiving your awards and you get no response from your league secretary/treasurer then YOU need to take this up with the President of the league who is there to ensure that the other officers carry out their duties.

More and more we hear that I am not getting my awards. I ask and I get no response. THE PROBLEM LIES WITH YOU THE BOWLER. You have to step up and demand that your league officers carry out their duties. YOU ARE PAYING THEM A FEE OR A SALARY OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT, but they are receiving compensation from you the bowler to perform all duties, not just some of them. Should you not get answers that satisfy your questions you have the right as a certified league bowler to request a meeting of the officers and directors of the league to find out where the problem is and what can be done to correct it. Should you still not get satisfaction then you have the option of filing a complaint with your league stating your grievance. There are guidelines in the rule book for how to file a complaint against an officer and what the leagues responsibilities are upon receipt of such a complaint.

There are flyers, notes, memos and many other types of communication that are delivered to each league secretary regarding bowling tournaments, leagues, meeting, etc. Sharing this information with the league bowlers is another responsibility of the league secretary/treasurer. If you bowl in more than one league and you are receiving this information in one league and not the other, then stand up and ask WHY! Bowlers continue to say "I didn’t know about that", "No one told me", and on and on. We, YOUR LOCAL BOARDS, put out the flyers, we provide the information to the league secretary to share with the league bowlers but we cannot make them do their job. YOU THE BOWLER CAN and it is your responsibility to see that they are carrying out the duties and responsibilities of their position. And, if you do not want to take action and stand up for yourself - DO NOT COMPLAIN TO ANYONE, SUCK IT UP and never receive your awards.

The Men’s 600 Club’s Championship Tournament was held on October 13, 2007, at AMF East. Attendance was poor but a good time was had by those that participated.

Qualifying for Division 1 was John Brignall, Vito DiBlasi, Bob Lobe and Dick Ayre. The Finals for Division 1 was between Phil Arena and Dick Ayre with Phil Arena being crowned the Division 1 Club Champion. In the qualification round Phil posted scores of 172-300-192 for a 745 with handicap.

Qualifying for Division II was Jack Neal, Bill Irelan, Art Grimes and Chris Jeffery. The Finals for Division II was between James Smith and Chris Jeffery with James Smith being crowned the Division II Club Champion.

The re-scheduled annual meeting of the Men’s 600 Club was held on October 26, 2007, but I do not have any information regarding that meeting. More later.

On Thursday, October 25, 2007, in the Men’s Unknown League at AMF West a feat of outstanding bowling was accomplished. Team 16 - Ryan’s Team - bowled a scratch game of 1,332 - scores were Mike Blanton 264; Jim Hood 258; Ryan O’Cull 276; Chas Williams 255 and Brian Eppinger 279. This qualifies for consideration by USBC as the highest scratch game bowled during the 2007-2008 fall season. Confirmation of their scores have been submitted for the competition, but it will be April, 2008, before we know if they won. Congratulations and hope they receive recognition for their accomplishment.

Re: Bowlers Responsibilties - Results from State Tournament - High Scratch Game - Weekly Scores    By Penny on 11/5/2007 10:41 PM
Yes the responsibility of awards should be followed up with everyone. I am the secretary of 2 leagues and the problem I have is getting awards from the mens association. I have the awards for the women the following week. The bowlers keep asking where their awards are. I do get the local ones from Lisa but the USBC awards sometimes its months and I have repeatedly made complaints. Anyone have any suggestions?
