A sound studio in the palm of your hand...

It’s amazing what modern-day technology can accomplish. For my recent birthday, I bought myself a small portable audio recorder, a Zoom H2. Not much bigger than a package of cigarettes, it fits comfortably in the hand. It has not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR built-in microphones which offer an amazing number of choices in recording sounds. It will record in stereo from either the front or the back, offering 90-degree coverage one way and 120-degree coverage the other. Or you can record four-channel audio using both front and back simultaneously.
You’re not restricted to just the built-in microphones either. You can plug in a mic. I have a small binaural mic I use with mine quite frequently. A binaural microphone is a dual microphone with two separate heads. The two pick-ups can be placed up to about two feet apart. True binaural recordings dictate that the typical distance between a human’s ears be used as the parallax base, but there’s enough lead wire to go substantially beyond the normal eight or nine inches if need be. The Zoom will record either mono or stereo, as well as the four-channel capability. Use its tracks in conjunction with a computer program and you can emulate 5.1 sound recording and play it over your home theater set-up.
The recordings are all digital of course, and can be configured in a number of permutations, for both .wav and .mpg recordings, and produce them in CD quality. The media is a Secure Digital card, and a pair of AA batteries power the device. A small tripod comes with the recorder, which can be used to isolate the base from the recorder. All in all, Zoom has done a pretty remarkable job in bringing such a versatile recorder into the marketplace.
It can not only record stereo audio, but it can do double-duty as a USB microphone for your computer, too. And if all that is not enough, then it can also be used as a chromatic tuner or a guitar tuner, and it contains a built-in metronome. Price is about $199. Also included is a wind-screen, various cables, ear buds, and a device that lets you use a standard microphone stand with the H2.
Pretty remarkable little device, almost like having a one-man sound studio in the palm of your hand!

Marion Oaks Crime rates    By Charlotte Shoemaker, Realtor, RE/MAX AllStars Real on 10/31/2007 6:10 AM
Emory, I think we both hold Marion Oaks dear to our hearts. Working with real estate buyers I constantly hear, "I don't want Marion Oaks, there's too much crime." I always argue this with them. I once had a school teacher moving from another area. She called the sheriff's office to ask about crime rate and was told that Marion Oaks was high. Emory, take a look at www.moving.com go to "City Profiles" and put in zip codes all around Ocala. If this info is accurate, Marion Oaks has one of the lowest crime rates in Marion County. The reason people think it's high is because when a crime occurs in Oak Run the press says Ocala. When a crime occurs in 34473 they say Marion Oaks. I could understand if Marion Oaks was incorporated. I'd like you to encourage Star Banner to republish the City profile information. Locals need to know that Marion Oaks is a good place filled with good, law abiding people. - I know that we can't believe everything we see on websites - so it may take some verifying with the sheriff's department but I figure you'll get further with them than I will. Thanks - Love your column. 352-454-5370
