When I was a child, I used to wonder if I would ever live long enough to make it out of elementary school and into Junior High. Once I did, those thoughts were replaced by wondering if I’d live long enough to make it to Senior High. And when that time inevitably rolled around, I found myself wondering if I would make it long enough to finish high school.
That particular thought, in an unending variety of permutations, has dogged me most of my life. When I was in the Army, I often wondered if I would live long enough to be a civilian again. When my time with Uncle Sam was completed just shortly following my marriage, I used to wonder if I’d live long enough to become a father. With the birth of our firstborn, I distinctly remember wondering if I would live long enough to see her grow to adulthood. A similar thought impressed itself onto my consciousness a year and a half later when our second child was born.
After the children grew up and went out on their own, I found myself wondering if I would live long enough to see retirement. Now that time is not too far off in the future. Only 45 working days more, to be exact. I’m not counting a week’s vacation due me in that total. Well, I’m still in reasonably good health, for a guy my age, so it looks like I just may make it that far. The thought strikes me though, that after I retire, there’ll probably be no wondering will I live long enough to – because after you retire, what’s left, other than days of piddling around, and working on the eternal honey-do list. Of course, my own personal list of stuff to do after I retire is really quite long, so I guess I’ll spend some of that time just wondering if I’ll live long enough to finish the tasks on that list.
Guess I’d better add a few more chores right now – just in case! |
