A few of my favorite photos. . .

What makes a photo a favorite photo?  First, as photojournalists we do NOT  tell people how to look, what to do and what to wear.  We record with our cameras, digital or video, of what happened at an event, crime scene or natural disaster.  The photo just happens in front of the lens.  I just record the moment.  I was once told to stop thinking and just take the photo as you might miss the moment.

Above is one of my favorite photos from a project that published last year on Muslim in Marion. Sana Qamar, age 13 on Aug. 20, 2006, just finishes her personal prayers on a Sunday with her family in the living room. Her mother is Dr. Humeraa Qamar, a local pediatrician and her father is Dr.  Asad Qamar, an area cardiologist, all gathered with three generations of family for prayer.  They are practicing Muslims and active in the local and global community in the area of charity.

I wanted to photograph a family praying together at their home. I was invited into their home,  served tea and cookies and we shared stories, not just the subject at hand.  We learned from each other – how delightful!

I think all too often we think our cultures, races and religions divide, but we are more alike then we dare think. Explore new worlds that are in your community today!
