Introduction of staff photographer Jannet Walsh

I am Jannet Walsh, a native of Minnesota and have been a photojournalist for the past 20 years. I will mark my 10th year at the Star-Banner in January 2008.

Above is one of my favorite photos from a perfect moment as the sky was so beautiful and a bit mystical overhead before a thunder storm arrived at Catholic Center Our Lady of Guadalupe, or also called La Guadalupana in Spanish, located at 11153 W. Highway 40, Ocala, Fla., Saturday evening, April 8, 2006.

Conversing in the Dutch language while freelancing with Limburgs Dagblad, a daily newspaper in Herleen, the Netherlands, and working on my Spanish skills, is just a small sampling of my exciting life I want to share with you. Prior to working in Europe, I worked at the Omaha World-Herald, Omaha, Neb., as a general assignment photojournalist and served a brief time on the photo assignment desk, 1990 to 1994.

My education includes a Master of Arts in photography from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio and a Bachelor of Science from St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minnesota. St. Cloud State is the same college the children attend from Lake Woebegone , an imaginary town made famous by Garrison Keillor’s radio program “A Prairie Home Companion” on National Public Radio, on the small-town life in Minnesota. We are all little above average there, as we must survive the harsh winters wearing our snowsuits walking to school!

If you see a redheaded photographer from the Star-Banner walking past you, please say hello. You might be my next story!

I have enjoyed Jannet's work during the past several months, when she started covering/photographing many of the hispanic activities in the Ocala area. Her standards as a photojournalist are excellent!

It's my big brother that got me here! We keep on learning from each other, but now it's digital and video! Sending my love from Florida to the woods of Wisconsin, Jannet

I love to photograph happy people when I have a chance! People wearing large, fun hats will always catch my eye.

As a photojournalist, I see many people in difficult situations in life. I have the best job to see the good, bad and really ugly in my community. This helps me appreciate my life even more.
Thanks,
Jannet
