Ahhh... the weather is moderating, the temperatures are going down, and if you pay close attention, you can actually feel a bit of the fall weather in the air from time-to-time. We’re creeping into the annual Festival season here in Beautiful Marion County!
Weekend before last was the Marion County Springs Festival, last weekend featured the Nine-Mile Pond Festival in Belleview, and lots of other festivals are popping up on our calendars to carry us through to the Christmas season. A big favorite which I try to attend each year is the McIntosh 1890s Festival held in northern Marion County in one of the most delightful and beautiful small towns you’ll ever see. The 1890s Festival is planned for Saturday, Oct. 20 this year. It runs from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. You’ll find McIntosh on 441 midway between Ocala and Gainesville. You can find more information at www.friendsofmcintosh.org on the Internet.
The 1890s Festival draws thousands and thousands of people from all over the state and probably beyond. It’s filled with crafters, artists, artisans, wood-workers and more, all eager to help the public get an early start on filling those Christmas gift needs. Each year, my wife and I wander up and down the oak-filled streets taking in all the displays, the games, the singing, the smells of freshly-baked goodies, while trying not to bump into too many people along the way. It’s almost like being at DisneyWorld, except it’s not as far to drive and it doesn’t cost anything to get in. Oh, and there are no adult rides. But all that walking is good for you, anyway, don’tcha know!
McIntosh is a quiet, sleepy little town 364 days out of the year, but on Festival day, its streets are jam-packed, the traffic is slow-moving and tortuous, and Porta-Potties are as common as wild flowers in the Spring.
This is truly a marvelous time of year in this part of Florida. The summer heat is dissipating, the air outside is clean, clear and fresh, and all the many festivals offer a great opportunity to get out and enjoy yourself. Why not take advantage of it, while you still can. |
