The noted Gator oddball impresses Celtics great Bill Russell.

"Reflective."
Yep, that guy up there on the right.
That's how New York Times columnist Harvey Araton describes former Gator and Chicago Bulls rookie Joakim Noah, the quirky young man who entertained and annoyed a nation and single-handedly wrote three seasons worth of story leads in The Gainesville Sun, in this fascinating account of Bill Russell's speech to a group of NBA newbies.
I'm not one of Noah's fans - I always knew there was a smart, worldly guy under the layers of goofery, but I find the whole act a bit pretentious. He also seems a bit self-absorbed to truly earn the "great teammate" tag he got in Gainesville - I'd give that award to Chris Richard. Upstaging your teammates with frenetic dances, incomprehensible speeches and general buffoonery isn't the mark of a person who is just trying to live each moment of his life to the fullest - it's the mark of an egomaniac who needs constant attention and validation, even at the expense of friends and teammates.
Anyway, it's worth a read. |
