A look at where Vanguard grad Daunte Culpepper could end up now that the Dolphins have set him free.
After weeks of trying, Ocala native Daunte Culpepper finally wrenched himself free of the Miami Dolphins this week. I still can't understand what Miami was thinking in holding onto Culpepper if they had no intention of letting him compete for the quarterback job. Daunte at 90 percent would have a fighting chance of beating out Trent Green for the No. 1 spot. I can see why the Dolphins wanted to wash their hands of Daunte, but the way they went about it was horribly unprofessional and equally misguided. No team was giving up a high draft pick for a guy it could sign outright at a lower salary with a little bit of patience.

Regardless, Daunte's a free man, and situations abound. A look at teams that might have an interest in Vanguard's favorite son:

JACKSONVILLE: Byron Leftwich is injury-prone, David Garrard is inconsistent, and a healthy Culpepper is an upgrade over either. A less-than-healthy Daunte, or even a severely rusty Daunte, simply muddies the rotation further. Anyway, the Jaguars are the clubhouse leaders at this point, and I'm rooting for Jax if only so I can go cover a few games this season. Odds: 50 percent.

BALTIMORE: Steve McNair is all but washed up, and Kyle Boller should be the backup no matter how bad of a starter the Ravens find. Culpepper's ability to throw deep would make a nice counter to the Willis McGahee-powered run game. Odds: 20 percent.

MINNESOTA: Tarvaris Jackson. That's who's starting for the Vikings at QB this season if the team takes their current roster into week one. If you ignore the history here - and granted, it's a lot to ignore - it's a perfect situation and has the makings of a classic tale of redemption. Odds: 15 percent.

ATLANTA: Could have a glaring need for a quarterback any day now, but Daunte can't put himself in the position to lose his job to Joey Harrington twice in his career. Odds: 5 percent

DETROIT: A team loaded with offensive firepower that could benefit from Daunte's downfield abilities, but I imagine Jon Kitna's productive enough for this team to take a pass. Unless Daunte can convert to wide receiver and catch Matt Millen's eye, of course. Odds: 5 percent

OTHERS: Kansas City could regret letting Green walk once they get a long look at Brodie Croyle/Damon Huard platoon; Tony Romo has yet to prove himself over a full year in Dallas, and Culpepper-Owens could be deadly; Marc Bulger is entering the last year of his deal in St. Louis and is reportedly pondering a holdout; Tampa Bay, like Jacksonville, has a lot of options but no unquestioned starter; Jason Campbell may not be ready for prime time in Washington. Odds: 1 percent each.
