I suppose it’s just plain ol’ unadulterated Human Nature to always want more than what you have; or to want something you don’t have. For some reason, I’ve always thought it would be nice to have a fancy little pool in the backyard. I don’t want one of those big holes in the ground where you can go swimming, or even an above ground model.
No, what I’m talking about is much more modest, something more like a little wading pool, y’know, one with lily pads, bulrushes and maybe even a goldfish or two. A little fountain in the middle, trickling water down some rocks, just to keep everything stirred up might be nice, too. A little stand of trees to protect the area from the hot summer sun would seem to fit in quite nicely with what I have in mind, as well.
I think of it as a quiet little piece of private paradise where I might someday string a hammock and maybe install a modest gazebo, a place where you can just retreat from the world, listen to the gurgling sound of water, and have your eyes delighted by bright splashes of color from a bed of multi-colored flowers straggling along the edge of the wading pool. It sounds like a refreshing spot for the soul, where you could rest for a bit, refresh your spirit, and prepare yourself for yet another day in the workaday jungle.
Such an idyllic place would surely be quite a temptation to visit on a daily basis, one would think, but having realized a few minor dreams before, and realizing how quickly they grow stale has caused me to hesitate before jumping into a project such as this.
If it were built, one would probably quickly tire of the summer heat, which can be quite stifling even in the evening. Then there would be the responsibility of keeping the flowers weeded, and watered. And keeping scum off the concrete shell making up the pond. Then, of course, you’d have to keep the fishes adequately fed. And oxygenate the water to the proper level, making sure it’s not too little, or too much.
Then policing the area and making sure no one is trying to make off with your decorations, or your fish, or your flowers could be problematic, too. Then, what if a hurricane bears down on us? Can’t think of any really effective way to protect the area, short of building four walls and erecting a roof over it!
Hmmm . . . while it sounds like a great idea on the surface, once you start ruminating on the issue, cracks begin to form in its perfect countenance.
Gee, sometimes Life is just not very nice! |
