Fleeting art brings joy, but it's soooo ephemeral!

Occasionally, my wife and I will watch a few programs on the Food Network. We especially like the programs that are about cake decorating or sugar sculpturing.
A few months back, we used to watch, on another network, a program which centered around building sand castles. These sand castles were not simple little structures. No, they were massive sculptures involving tons of sand, into which intricately-shaped parapets, flags, soldiers, horses, moats, drawbridges and more were depicted. Some of those castles were so compelling, it was a shame they couldn’t be encased in epoxy and kept for the enjoyment of generations yet to come.
The same is true of some of the incredibly intricate cakes on the Food Network, the sugar sculptures, too. Sand castles, sugar sculptures and fancy decorated cakes are what I call fleeting art, fleeting because none of it is destined to last very long. The same is also true of ice sculptures.
It always seems like such a great shame to me to put so much effort into a project that will only wash away with the incoming tide, or be cut up and stuck down someone’s throat. Such a waste of pure talent and great artistry! I suppose the fact that the cake shows generally award $10,000 to the winner does justify such efforts somewhat, but it does nothing for the losers except blow an entire day of work.
I at least hope someone, somewhere, is keeping a careful photographic documentation of some of these amazing little works of art. It’s so sad to think that such beauty is so fleeting, and can never be recovered again.

Not to fear! If you're watching it on Food Network, obviously all the work and results are well documented. They're on TV, after all! And if you created something like that, wouldn't you take a lot of pictures of it? I certainly would!
