 Vacation Business by Jo Clifford

I spent the last four days with best friends from Oregon camping at Flagler Beach and playing tour guide in St. Augustine.  Except for the smoke from wild fires, the weather was perfect.

My friend, Linda, caught the “beading bug,” and as we were shopping for beads and creating ideas, I suggested she start a small business to sell her creations while traveling around the country in her RV.  From then on, the entire mini-vacation was about developing this new small business.  LBImaginations.net was born while riding the Red Train to the Fountain of Youth.  I think the water we drank there gave us a youthful enthusiasm for taking risks. Our ideas built one upon the other until the entire business plan was constructed and Linda’s “to do” list was full.  It is never too late to be creative, start a business, or take a risk.  Working on a few new ideas for my own bead/crafts business!

My body was resting some on the vacation, but my mind was busy working, planning, thinking, creating, designing, organizing, and developing from sunrise into the wee hours. Getting away from the routine does give me a new perspective and opportunity to think beyond the daily grind. I think it is good business to vacation. Now, however,  I need a vacation from my vacation.

As I was reading it, I was thinking "she needs a vacation from her vacation." Then I read your last line and see you feel that way. I always feel this way after a "vacation." I am always on the go and trying to get things accomplished. I end up putting more things on my "to do" list and then it seems like it is never accomplished.

I think it is great that you all helped Linda develop her business. It sounds like it helped you with ideas of your own. Do I sense a little competition?

There is a huge market for developing small businesses for second or third careers. Where there is a market, there is a demand. Marketing Packages, "How-to" books, all of the supporting services are ready to be tapped. There are many people with time, money to invest, motivation to begin a business, often arising from a hobby. Way to go, Linda!

No competition --- Linda and I are the very best of friends. In the past few days, we have continued to dialogue about ideas. We'll exchange websites, ideas, and patterns so that both of our little bead businesses will grow. Too fun. We're energized!
