 Scene of the Crime

Newscasters have commented abut how poised the Virginia Tech witnesses are in their accounts of the event.  Certainly they are courageous.  Some had the presence of mind to document with cell phone photos.  Others took desperate measures to survive.  No doubt, some of the quiet composure is the effect of shock and trauma,

But, I wonder if some of the objectivity of the accounts is fortified by the generation's exposure to violence, the media, and the plethora of crime scenes processed and autopsies performed on prime time television nightly.  I admit I am one who can watch every version of Law and Order and every city of CSI until I believe I could process a crime scene myself.

Is anybody with me?

When I heard the early reports of a shooter going from room to room blastiing one person after another I thought of Doom, Wolfenstein 3D or Mortal Kombat. I wonder if the killer practiced for his real life Armageddon on these simulated battlegrounds. Just a thought.

It is difficult for me to comprehend what the witnesses had to experience. In fact, it’s almost overwhelming to me. It makes me think about how I would have acted if I was in their situation.

I think I’m able to differentiate between fiction and reality when it comes to media. I have a different reaction to gore or violence that appears in fictional media compared with what can be seen in medical programs, for example. I used to play some of those video games mentioned in the previous post when I was younger. Those games were always kind of cartoony and over-the-top to me. However, I know that video games have come a long way since then and are a lot more realistic. I think the same can be said for all visual-oriented entertainment media in general. It has come a lot closer to approximating reality. That means it has the potential to be even more of an influence to those that constantly subject themselves to it. Knowing that, I think those involved in media-related entities may want to consider taking a deeper look at what they are presenting.

I have to admit that I love CSI and Law and Order and probably could be a detective myself but I'm not sure how I would have re-acted as a 20 year old student if a gun man entered my classroom. I don't really know if anyone knows for sure until you are faced with such a situation. I cannot even imagine what they must be going through.
Maybe these shows are not such a bad thing, if they make us aware of what Law Enforcement needs from witness to "catch the bad guy". I do think that they have been exposed to way more than I ever was at their age and this contributes to how many of them handled this situation. No matter what they have seen on T.V. it couldn't have even come close to what they must have seen that day. Hats off to them!
