 Iis It Just Me?

Maybe it is just me.  I’m suspicious of the motives behind the scenes regarding the latest Don Imus fiasco.  Is he a curmudgeon (as some people refer to him) gone awry or is he extremely good at what he does which is to stir controversy?  He knows the rules under which he operates.  I’m thinking ratings will shoot up, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will have a new venue and menu for debate, and talk show hosts will have guests debating for days about freedom of speech, FCC regulations, our values, etc.  I suppose it is a nice break, though, from the discussions about who next presidential candidate will be, what general is messing up in Iraq, and who will win American Idol.  I'm bored with it already.

Nope. Not just you. It seems the media creates a lot of grist for its own mill. Sometimes it really is more detail than I like. I've heard so many autopsy reports in the last month I believe I could perform one myself.

I read somewhere a description of the Imus fallout and the explanation that there were a number of contributing factors that lead to the outcome. One was that the whole thing came to light on Easter Weekend--the "slow news day" explanation. Another was the endless apology--kick the guy when he is down. Another was the curmudgeon factor--he just doesn't get it. No need for endless debate. Derogatory humor on the airwaves just won't work anymore. There are too many listeniing and watching.

In my Social and Cultural course we were talking about Imus' statements and their implications and I said basically the same thing. I had never even heard of Imus before all this controversy and now he has become a household name. It is very sad that the very thing most people despise him for is how he has beome famous and the additional publicity only seems to add to it.
Isn't it interesting that the more outrageous people become the more popular they become in the eyes of the public. So when will we decide that the media has gone too far? I don't know but I am beginning to wonder.
Did anyone catch the Dr. Phil show about average people who had become instant celebrities as a result of reality tv? If not, here is a quick recap: there was a man on the show who wants to produce a new reality television show where a male virgin will lose his virginity. They actually had a male virgin on the show who wants to participate in the show in hopes of becoming rich and famous. Just when you thought you had seen it all, something even more barbaric is thrown in your face!
