Here's my two cents' worth. I'm Jo, Director at Webster University in Ocala and this is my pet peeve for today.
What is up with this pet food business? My cat, Kiko, has been ill and we discovered today that her other food has been recalled. Last week, we took back the dry food to the vet’s office. Today, we have to dump about 30 cans of food into the garbage. How does one China factory producing an ingredient have such influence on our pet food industry? Somebody explain this to me. AND, while you’re at it, how safe is our food? I have always trusted my government’s watchful eye over our food industry and trusted that my food is safe. I’m not so trusting any more. I’m worried. The pet food company’s offer to pay for my vet bill tomorrow doesn’t reduce my anxiety, nor will it quickly gain back my confidence. Will big business say to us “oops” when our pets, and possibly our loved ones or ourselves, become ill and/or die? Where are the checks and balances? Where is the accountability? |

| Hey Jo: As a result of these food contamination cases, I am astonished to discover how many companies sell the same product under different labels. Jiff peanut butter, for example, is also sold under the Walmart brand. Pet food produced by the same company is sold under several labels. I guess the only difference, besides the label, is the marketing. |

Hello Dr. Jo,
I was thinking of similar concerns when it comes to manufacturers and their careless efforts to provide us adequate foods for our pets and ourselves.
I hear that many of the compensations that companies offer are ridiculous. I remember when I purchased one of the bad peanut butter brands from Wal-mart, I was offered two options: a refund or another bottle of the same brand. I feel that I as well as many Americans are intelligent enough to say, "Hey, no thanks. We will just do away with the peanut butter for a while!"
And finally, a paid doctor's bill or a small token of their sympathy will not compensate us for the loss of a loved one or a beloved pet. |

Hi Dr. Jo When the pet food scare came out I was very scared for my animals. One of my dogs already has numerous health problems. I try and be safe with them only buying particular foods thinking I was ahead of the game. My one dog who has problems did get sick, I had to take him to the emergency vet clinic, the Dr. told me he had pancratics from eating to much fatty food. There was no question in my mind his illness was from eating fatty foods. Then I questioned the food the many that were being recalled, my brand was not on the list. But that did not stop me from questioning how safe is the food i buy them. There was no way I could prove it, because my brand was not listed. But as you state how many more items should we be afraid of. How many organic foods have been recalled because of bacteria already, we can not even be safe with that. Maybe we should all think about growing our our fruits and vegetables. Then we would have to worry about the soil we used to grow it in. |

| I am Stephanie from PAWS & CLAWS PET SITTING a local pet sitter in Ocala . I too am very concerned about the news and events happening to our furry babies. I would hate for this to continue being scared to feed our pet. Especially when it comes to brand name foods we know and use to trust. I can only say thank goodness for having great Vets in our town that can help try to save our animals if they get ill. Stephanie bostons1@comcast.net |
