Life could be great – if only . . .

Sometimes, I think it would be quite nice if life and its various responsibilities could be recorded, just like on a DVR, and stored away until we get around to facing up to it.
I can just see those old chores still waiting to be done piling up sky-high right now, filling up one hard drive after another, until they reach the ceiling, then it’d be time to start another stack!
Responsibilities, commitments, promises, marriages, dreams, deaths of loved ones, goals – so many things that fill our lives could be stored away until we were prepared, both time-wise and emotionally, to face both the rigors and the pleasures that life can bring our way. We could put off anything that bothered us, and then, if we wanted to anticipate some expectedly sweet event in our lives, we could put that off, too, until we just hungered so much for it that we couldn’t stand it any longer!
We could put off school, education, visits to the doctor, those root canals, promotions at work, the occasional firing from a workplace (!), all those visits from the mother-in-law, the door-to-door salesperson or anyone else we didn’t cotton to. And it’s quite possible that it could all work out to our advantage.
We could delay the onset of high blood pressure from too much stress in our lives, we could delay those traffic tickets that inevitably result from our traveling around, we could delay all those press deadlines in the publishing industry. And once life is suitably recorded away on our DVRs, we could go back and savor all those exquisitely sweet moments that brighten each life, and make us all the more anxious to experience the next one.
It could be like that, y’know, within a few more centuries maybe, soon as someone figures out all the mechanics of how to make it happen.
But, realistically, it’s probably not much more than a pipe dream. And the reason why is that the good folks at the Internal Revenue Service would NEVER agree to putting off unpleasant tasks, would they? :-)
