For those of you interested in local politics, here’s a list of upcoming forums, thanks mostly to Susan Vogel, Marion County public information officer:
1) Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m., the Ocala-Marion County Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Hobnob & Candidates Forum at the Ocala Hilton
Hobnob admission is $15. To order tickets, call the chamber at 629-8051.
It’ll be broadcast live on the Marion Education Channel.
“There will be a live feed into the hobnob so that you can hear the candidates respond to a series of questions from a panel comprised of Chamber members,” according to the chamber Web site, www.ocalacc.com.
This forum includes a long list of candidates. So you’ll get a glimpse, at least, of what each one is about.
2) Oct. 22 from 2 to 5 p.m., the Smart Growth Coalition Forum at the Marion County Public Library Headquarters. For information call Margie Bielling at 685-2434.
“Brad Rogers, Editorial Page Editor of the Star-Banner, will serve as moderator for this event that will focus on issues such as sprawl, the sale of the Ocala National Forest, and illegal immigration,” according to a coalition news release.
So, if you think Brad Rogers will have some good questions about growth, you might want to go to that forum.
The candidates you’ll see are state House candidates Dennis Baxley and James Walker and the local County Commission candidates, Bielling told me.
U.S. House District 6 Rep. Cliff Stearns will have a letter read, and Democratic candidate Dave Bruderly will attend.
3) Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., the Northwest Non-Partisan Forum at Fellowship Baptist Church, 10500 N. U.S. 27
4) Oct. 25 at 1:30 p.m., Federation of Manufactured Home Owners of Florida, at Paddock Park South Mobile Home Park, 8880 S.W. 27th Ave.
The point of contact is Howard Mautner at 622-8881.
He said the four County Commission candidates each will have five minutes to speak. After each one speaks, the audience members will be able to ask them questions.
So this may be one of your best opportunities to put a commission candidate on the spot with your particular concern.
5) Oct. 26 at 7 p.m., SHADY Greenways Conservation Alliance, at the Sheriff’s Office South Multi-District Office on South U.S. 441. The point of contact is alliance secretary Michelle Shearer, 622-7544.
The candidate list is still being hammered out. The candidates will get to introduce themselves and then answer questions submitted by the audience.
They're trying to get people informed about the candidates so voters don't "go in blindly voting because I’m a Democrat or a Republican,” Shearer said.
