National Convention Highlights
The Bowling Blog By Debbie Whitten on 5/17/2008 8:20 AM

Sorry there was no blog entry last week, as I was attending the USBC National Convention and workshops in Kansas City, Missouri, as a Delegate for the Women’s Association. I was in the Saturday legislative meeting and election of directors and not able to complete the blog prior to leaving to fly home.

For all the scoop on what occurred you can go to bowl.com and click on the various links that they have set up regarding the various workshops, the "Clash Of Champions", the legislative action that occurred and the elections.

My take on the Convention and highlights from the events I attended are below.

This seemed to be the most unorganized of the three (3) conventions I have attended. There was not much variety in the workshops offered this year from the two (2) previous but I did attend several, one of which w ...

Saxophone by Erica Brough

This is musician Kenny Johnson jamming on his saxophone at Club Absolute in Ocala several months ago. The photo was made by using a strobe and a slow shutter speed. I had a lot of fun shooting him and his band in the low neon lights.

Wedding Horse by Erica Brough

This horse is all dressed up for a wedding I shot a while ago. Although the bride was quite beautiful, I was drawn to the horse's beauty most of all. The bride and groom had a country wedding with each of them on horseback for the ceremony.

Bring on the Entrepreneurs!
Speaking of business..." By Dr. Philip R. Geist on 5/8/2008 9:15 PM
Many communities, even before the recent economic slowdown have tried to attract or grow new businesses, revitalize their downtowns, and help create high tech, high wage jobs for residents. A lot of those communities have been stymied in their efforts by ‘what they didn’t have.’ They thought their lack of business incubators, highways, airports, or existence of a venture capital fund was holding them up. What they really needed were entrepreneurs…

Abortion: Is a local candidate's position relevant?
Marion Politics By Ocala.com Election Coverage on 5/2/2008 8:50 AM
We asked the heads of the local Democratic and Republican parties the following question: Candidates for local and state offices often include their positions on abortion in their platform. Since these candidates do not vote on U.S. Supreme Court justices, are their positions on abortion relevant?

The Rock ready to rumble again
Running Wide Open By Joe VanHoose on 5/1/2008 12:33 PM

The most important and interesting stock car race this weekend won't be at Richmond International Raceway, where the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races Saturday night. It will be a few hundred miles south in the sand hills of North Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

After four years of relative silence, Rockingham Speedway will reopen its doors to thousands of race fans and fifty ARCA cars and drivers. Just like old times, the Carolina 500 will start at noon and have a national television audience via Speed Channel.

With the rest of the big time American racing series taking Sunday off, Rockingham, known by race fans and drivers as The Rock, will once again take center stage.

But is The Rock, which NASCAR abandoned in 2004 for a second race at Texas Motor Speedway, ready to put its best foot forward? Track owner Andy Hillenburg thinks so.

Kinsey wedges way to victory, Crouse wins again
Running Wide Open By Joe VanHoose on 5/1/2008 12:16 PM
Dave Kinsey led all 30 laps in the $1,000-to-win Pepsi Challenge Hobby Stock race Friday night at Ocala Speedway, but that's not to say he wasn't challenged. Kinsey held off David Miller over the last five laps, driving Miller into the infield to stay in front and take the win.

"I was just holding on for dear life," Kinsey said afterward. "It was an exciting last couple of laps, but we maintained."

Miller looked to have the strongest car and came from the back of the 24-car field to the front after spinning on the second lap. By lap 14, he had survived a handful of cautions to move up to second position.

Kinsey moved lower and lower on the racing groove as the laps wound down and Miller closed in. With two laps to go, Miller edged his car underneath Kinsey as the two drove into turn three. Kinsey refu ...

Is now the right time?... Lessons Learned from History
Speaking of business..." By Dr. Philip R. Geist on 4/30/2008 10:21 PM
This is the keynote address that Dr. Geist gave to the graduates of the Ocala / Marion County Chamber of Commerce’s fifth Entrepreneurial Academy program at the Ocala Hilton on Wednesday, April 30th, 2008. It addresses the question of going into business and may be encouraging for anybody who is wavering in that decision.

Krause Springs by Erica Brough
Frame 37 By photoblog on 4/30/2008 12:36 PM

Ahhhhhhhh... how inviting! This is a little Texas secret called Krause Springs. Yes, this is Texas, about 45 minutes west of Austin. My girlfriends and I visited this private property for just $2 each and we basically had the place to ourselves. There were a couple of waterfalls, a rope swing, a garden and tons of butterflies. And the owners, an older couple, were really sweet.

Wright all wrong for Obama's campaign
Marion Politics By Ocala.com Election Coverage on 4/29/2008 11:10 AM
One thing seems obvious about the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr: the only thing bigger than his mouth is his ego. Wright continues to haunt Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

Naked - Alan Youngblood
Frame 37 By photoblog on 4/28/2008 10:59 AM

Ok, if you thought that maybe I had finally gone off my rocker and posted pictures of myself naked, sorry.

Last weekend I did feel naked though. Canon Professional Services send me one of the most anticipated HD video cameras in a while to try out for four days only. The Canon VIXVIA HF-10 is a tiny consumer level flash memory HD video camera that can record 2 hours of full HD video to it's built in memory.  I didn't mean for this to be a technical blog entry so if you have an interest, you can read my full review and see images and movies from it here .  http://starbannerphoto/hf10 &a ...

In March 2008 I had to get new eyeglasses, as my old pair could not be repaired.  I was not sure if I really liked my new glasses, so I took my own photo using a small camera located on my laptop computer.  I find the technology truly amazing! I still don’t know if I like the new glasses, but like the technology.

School Board candidates: Who's running and who's earning
Marion Politics By Ocala.com Election Coverage on 4/22/2008 8:00 AM
Candidates are lining up to run against Marion County School Board member Steve Hering this fall.
As of today, Hering had four opponents for the nonpartisan District 2 seat:  Eleanor J. Drakeford, Jacqueline Porter, Bernard LeCorn and Johnathan Raymon Connell. Although Hering is the incumbent, he has yet to report any campaign contributions or spending, while Porter has contributed $30,000 of her own money to her campaign.
Hering isn’t the only elected school official with competition. Bobby James, who was appointed to fill Kurt Kelly’s unexpired term when Kelly won a seat in the Florida Legislature, has two opponents: Mark Gamoneda and Karen Francis-Winston.
A third School Board member, Judi Zanetti, is opposed so far by attor ...

The Professor schools the field at Ocala Speedway
Running Wide Open By Joe VanHoose on 4/20/2008 10:45 AM

It may have taken him longer than he wanted, but Ocala’s Ivedent Lloyd found a familiar place Friday night at Ocala Speedway. After a ten-year hiatus, Lloyd was back in track’s victory lane.

“We’d been working on this new car for a bit, and we got it running real good,” Lloyd said after winning the 25-lap late model feature. Rich Pratt finished second and Mike Bresnahan fell from an early lead to third.

Lloyd started near the rear of the 16-car field but found himself running third by lap 9. On lap 10, Lloyd used a lap car as a pick to pa ...

Meet me at the races
Running Wide Open By Joe VanHoose on 4/20/2008 10:05 AM

Let's say I'm a little lonely, hypothetically of course. I hang around racetracks and go about my business, but I come home to an empty apartment.

Remember, this is hypothetical.

Nevertheless, there are a lot of single race fans out there, race fans who may want to find that special someone with a similar passion. If you're into online dating, big sites like eHarmony and Match.com don't have any exact criteria for one Jeff Gordon fan looking for another.

For those looking to find romance at a race, Steve Agins has created a special place for that special someone. Meetmeattheraces.com, which debuted in February, welcomes those single, lonely race fans who want the love of their life to share in the real love of their life.

"This has been something I've ...
