Spring Feet by Erica Brough
By photoblog on 1/23/2008 12:14 PM

This is one of about 100 photos I have taken of my feet. No, I do not have a foot fetish! This is just all I can see of myself when looking through the camera lens. I often want to have my picture taken at various memorable locations, however, as the photographer, I usually just get a shot of my feet at these places. Here my feet are happily resting on an oak tree that leans over the boils at Juniper Springs in the Ocala National Forest. Pretty water, lovely oak, happy feet.

Barn Oaks by Erica Brough
By photoblog on 1/14/2008 9:43 AM

I believe I took this picture along CR 475 in south Ocala as I was on my way to the Florida Horse Park. I thought the barn had some charm, so I pulled off the road and began shooting. The homeowner came out and allowed me on the property so that I could get closer. I pulled out some of the color saturation and used a "glow" filter to get the finished image.

Hedge web by Jannet Walsh
By photoblog on 1/10/2008 4:43 PM

By Jannet Walsh
I found a spider web decorating my front hedge this morning as I walk to pickup my Star-Banner newspaper at my curb.  I didn’t find any spiders or other insects trapped in the web, so I did the next thing possible.

Simply stepping in front of the web and pointing the camera at myself made a self-portrait.  I really could not see what I was photographing.  I took several photos just to get it right, or good enough!

Natural Beauty by Erica Brough
By photoblog on 1/5/2008 5:11 PM
Oh Natural Beauty! What photographer can resist a beautiful sky, river or tree. This time: beautiful eyes! These sisters, Natalie Humber, 14, and Jasena Humber, 10, share such pretty eye color, and smiles, for that matter. I was on an assignment to shoot the Art Van Go art program for kids at the Baseline Trailhead Park in Ocala, Fla. on Saturday, January 5, 2008 when I saw these gorgeous sisters of Caucasian and Jamaican ethnicity.

Afternoon house walk
By photoblog on 1/4/2008 9:53 PM

By Jannet Walsh

Today I made a visit to Alberta Tindal, age 92, of Ocala. Her neighbors guided me to her home and right to her door.   She uses a walker as she makes her way from the kitchen to the living room.  Tindal is in need of several repairs on her home and is seeking help through Community With A Heart.  The kitchen counter and cabinets need to be repaired or replaced, Friday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2008.

Work Horse by Erica Brough
By photoblog on 12/26/2007 3:33 PM

This was a common scene in Nicaragua. The poor horses work every bit as hard as the Nicaraguans do.  I thought I felt sorry for the horse, until I saw the same type of carts actually being pulled by a single individual. Not everyone who owns a cart owns a horse.  I have always liked this image because it is so simple. Walking through the streets of Jinotepe, in the Carazo region of Nicaragua, it's as though time has stood still.

Angel in Fort McCoy
By photoblog on 12/20/2007 11:43 AM

“Katie” Jewell, age 3 years, has Cerebral Palsy and many health problems.   Her grandmother Sharon Jewell, lifts her to her wheelchair and takes care of her at home  in rural Fort McCoy, Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 19, 2007.  The family needs a van to transport a small wheelchair and other items when they leave home.  They have a small car that does not fit their need.

When I departed the Jewell house I told the grandmother she was an angel for all her hard work.  She replied that her grandchildren deserve it. This is one of the many times as a journalist I found someone doing the best with the situation, but really needed help.  When we ...

Tossing lace bobbins
By photoblog on 12/5/2007 11:34 AM

The moment I noticed the lace bobbins at The Marion Alliance Brick City Center for the Arts, located at 23 West Broadway, in Ocala, I was very excited! Daniela Banatova, originally from the Czech Republic, learned in high school the ancient art of bobbin lace making, a textile art, very popular in Europe in the 16th century.

I remember demonstrations in Belgium and friends trying to learn this tricky art form when I lived in the Netherlands. You might want to visit Daniela Banatova at the The Marion Alliance Brick City Center as she designs holiday designs with her old canvas that looks like a rolled sleeping bag. She told me the canvas or bag was originally stuffed with straw, but wo ...

Beauty Queen by Erica Brough
By photoblog on 12/3/2007 2:45 PM

Chris Waldorf, 30, also known as Crystle Chambers, is a drag queen who performed regularly at nightclubs throughout Florida and competed for years in pageants when I took this photo in 2004. I spent lots of time following Chris around with my camera, learning about his lifestyle. I watched him dance on stage in costumes he made at home with his own sewing machine. I listened to him and his friends, all males dressed as females, sing along to the soundtrack of "Moulin Rouge." I watched him change a tire at his mother's house. I dodged his screaming fans, who were waving dollar bills toward him. And I was impressed by his Cher impersonations. And in this photo, I was watching Chris get dressed for a show. He was rummaging through a suitcase of clothes, shoes, wigs and make-up in a motel room in Orlando, and I got ...

Christmas Parade
By photoblog on 12/3/2007 1:00 AM
I thought it would be fun to shoot time lapse of the Christmas Parade staging. This is a bizarre look at the parade activities. I shot two angles. The first one is on the front of Ocala.com. The second angle is here. Open this entry to read about the project and see Seven hours of parade prep go by in under two minutes. Alan Youngblood, Photo Editor

Canine Mohawk
By photoblog on 11/27/2007 7:19 AM
I shot this photo several years ago while on assignment at a Belleview, Fla. horse farm. Prissy, a 9-year-old cat, gives Corky, an 11-year-old golden retriever, what appears to be a mohawk haircut as she cuddles up to him, while the pair watch their owners ride horses at The Branches horse farm. Curtis and Barbara Murphree, the animals owners, said the two slept in the same basket when Prissy was a kitten and have gotten along as best friends ever since. Truck Fire
By photoblog on 11/27/2007 7:02 AM
Joe Darley shot this photo of a semi-tractor trailer fully engulfed in flames after an accident on County Road 484 near Southwest 110th Avenue, west of Ocala, Fla. on Friday, Nov. 9, 2007. Really HOT fire. Wonder what was in the trailer. Thanks Joe. Nice shot, right place, right time. Joe e-mailed me the pic. It was trapped in a spam filter until now.

Busy Weekend holiday card edition
By photoblog on 11/19/2007 4:57 PM

The thing I got to do on Sunday is write a story about making Christmas Cards. That will run in Features on Friday I think,. Years ago, I wanted to learn how to use Photoshop better so I decided to use the lessons and make custom Christmas cards for my family and friends. I figured that was way better then doing those boring tutorials of flowers and the like in the manual. That started something. Now I have to do one every year. This year will be a sad year. Bailey, our 14-year-old Brittany,  was always a reluctant participant and never really liked having her picture taken but she put up with it. Miss Bail, as I called her, passed away in September. She will have the prime spot on the card this year. Our other kids, two rescued Brittanys and two P ...

A busy weekend
By photoblog on 11/19/2007 4:25 PM
.

This weekend was very busy for me. A sick shooter gave me the opportunity to shoot a full day on Saturday. As an editor, I don't ofter get to spend as much time on the streets as I'd like.
Saturday as you know, was quite busy with the Gators in the swamp, four large horse events and light up Ocala. Something else very important to a lot of families was the MCYFL Superbowl. I shot a portion of Jr. and Senior Championship. As I watched those kids through a long lens, I realized they were competing just as hard as the College kids I've shot on Florida field many times. I really enjoyed shooting that. Here's just one photo from day. Many others are available in the Zoom galleries I put up for each game. One is here -

Backyard White Ibises
By photoblog on 11/18/2007 9:33 AM

I was busy eating breakfast on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007,  shortly after 7a.m., my eyes were turned to see white birds flying into my backyard.  My backyard must have been selected for the breakfast gathering.  A flock of White Ibises were feeding in the location I once had a swimming pool. When I first noticed the visitors there were only a few birds, maybe 6 or more.  When I photographed the flock, I can only estimate around 100 birds, but really it is unknown.

I knew I would only have one chance to photograph the birds.  I opened my back door, pointed my camera and the flock took flight.   The excitement and sound ...
