Ronnie Billie, of Clewiston, Fla., a member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and owner of Ronnie’s Seminole Chickees, is building traditional Seminole houses called Chickees in the Mikasuki language of his tribe.
Billie was joined by fellow Seminole Ronnie Billie and a crew working on Chickees at the Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center, Ocala, Wednesday morning, October 31, 2007, Ocala, Fla.
Examples of patchwork typical of the Seminole Tribe of Florida are always on display at the Silver River Museum. Individual pieces are sewn together to create the design for a skirt and other clothing ...

Ocala Arts Festival |

Art shows are like a “candy shop” for the eye for a photojournalist!
It is hard to pick what to photograph when there are Irish harp and flute players, fine artists and even photographers exhibiting their art, only to name a few. Young artist Tyler Chighizola, age 10, of Madison Street Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, demonstrated how to throw a clay pot on a potter's wheel.
The 41st Annual Ocala Arts Festival, FAFO, started on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007 and will continue on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, 10 am to 5 pm. The event includes a variety of art workshops, music demonstrations. The event is located near the corner of Southeast 25th Avenue and Fort King Street, Ocala.

This old house and more |

Here are two photos from the past week that did not make the print version of the Star-Banner. A man and his dog in front of his home that is at least 122 years old, is one I would love to share with you.
Frank Ciotti, owner of the 1885 McFadden-Ciotti house, located near the corner of 7th Street and Avenue 4, next to the Van Ness Park, in McIntosh, Fla., holds his dog Tucker. Ciotti was one of the many people on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007 at the McIntosh 1890's Festival. His house is a Greek Gothic design with double porches. The house was not open for public viewing.
Some of the historic buildings, such as the McIntosh Presbyterian Church, see photo below, located on Avenue F, next Ciotti’s ho ...

My latest Ramblings |

If you've been reading our missives here, Jannet pointed to my photo gallery of Princess Diana Dresses. She provided this link directly to it. http://ocala.com/assets/flash/new_galleryX2_8b.swf
I'm really proud of this but it wound up being more of a project then I had planned. We couldn't
use the images the museum already had of the dresses because of
licensing problems. I had to shoot all 30 dresses during the two hour press
preview. They were all behind glass in dimly lit exhibit salons.
Available light, even with a polarizer, was out. I set an off camera
strobe to one side of each dress hoping to minimize the glare. With
some help from our multimedia tech, we cut out and touched up every
dress and put them on a background I created in photoshop. Yes, kids,
it's never as easy as it looks on TV.
Oh, the fine print on that.

Introduction of staff photographer Jannet Walsh |

I am Jannet Walsh, a native of Minnesota and have been a photojournalist for the past 20 years. I will mark my 10th year at the Star-Banner in January 2008.
Above is one of my favorite photos from a perfect moment as the sky was so beautiful and a bit mystical overhead before a thunder storm arrived at Catholic Center Our Lady of Guadalupe, or also called La Guadalupana in Spanish, located at 11153 W. Highway 40, Ocala, Fla., Saturday evening, April 8, 2006.
Conversing in the Dutch language while freelancing with Limburgs Dagblad, a daily newspaper in Herleen, the Netherlands, and working on my Spanish skills, is just a small sampling of m ...

The Yo Yo carnival rides into the sky just moments after the opening of the 2007 Blessed Trinity School Carnival, Thursday afternoon, Oct. 18, 2007. The event started at 5pm with a countdown on the loud speaker to announce the opening of the four-day event, continuing Friday, 5pm to 11pm, Saturday, 11am to 11pm and Sunday Oct. 21, 11am to 9 pm.
The event is to raise money for Blessed Trinity School, located at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 5 Southeast 17th Street, Ocala. Rev. Patrick J. Sheedy, parish pastor, estimated about 10,000 people or more might attend the event of food, fun and festivities. The money will benefit the private Catholic school’s supplies, technology and other educational needs for students. ...

Washington Del Castillo, of Ocala and originally from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, wears a traditional costume with a large sombrero, meaning hat in Spanish, featuring a large brim to provide shade.
The Ocala Hispanic Festival was held at McPherson Government Complex, Southeast 25th Avenue, Ocala.
Event organizer Fausto Pazmin, of Ocala, and originally from Cali Colombia, estimated about 2,000 people attended the event. The event featured 16 flags from Spanish speaking countries, with a procession complete with national anthems. The Star Spangled Banner was the first of the national anthems played, followed by the other participating countries, Saturday afternoon, Oct. 20, 2007, Ocala, Fla.< ...

A few of my favorite photos. . . |

What makes a photo a favorite photo? First, as photojournalists we do NOT tell people how to look, what to do and what to wear. We record with our cameras, digital or video, of what happened at an event, crime scene or natural disaster. The photo just happens in front of the lens. I just record the moment. I was once told to stop thinking and just take the photo as you might miss the moment.
Above is one of my favorite photos from a project that published last year on Muslim in Marion. Sana Qamar, age 13 on Aug. 20, 2006, just finishes her personal prayers on a Sunday with her family in the living room. Her mother is Dr. Humeraa Qamar, a local pediatrician and her father is D ...

Welcome to the Frame 37.
I'm Alan Youngblood, Photo Editor at the Star-Banner. I started this blog as an outlet for our visual journalists to express thoughts on photojournalism, experiences in the field, photo tips and techniques or just anything they wanted. You should see several entries a week from me, staff photographer Bruce Ackerman, Staff photographer Jannet Walsh and Staff photographer Erica Brough. I'm hoping to persuade former Senior photographer and now Multimedia Editor Doug Engle to make an entry from time to time as well.
There is no telling what you may find here. Favorite photos. The photo that didn't run. Perhaps a video or two (although I can't promise because I'm unsure if we can show videos in this space) or just whatever is on our mind at the moment. I guarantee you will see photos of my Brittanys Jesse and Fancy from time to time. This is Jesse cutting up. (I guess you expected some image of death a ...
